10 app ideas with real search demand, sized with keyword data

About 2,900 people a month search Google for “app ideas” in the US, and another 3,600 search “ideas for apps”. “Micro saas ideas” gets 480. Most of the lists they find are brainstorms where nobody checked whether anyone searches for what the app actually does.

Each idea below includes its main keyword’s monthly US search volume, cost per click, and Google Ads competition, pulled from seodata.dev on 2026-10-13. We ranked them by what the data says about buyers rather than by raw search volume.

The ten ideas at a glance

9. Digital punch carddigital punch card480$9.780.64
10. Cron job monitoringcron job monitoring140$7.140.14

Keep two things in mind when reading these numbers. First, the competition column shows Google Ads competition (a 0 to 1 score for how many advertisers bid on the keyword) as opposed to organic SEO difficulty. Second, close variants of a keyword often share a single volume figure in Google’s data. Both “email signature generator” and “email signature maker” show 18,100, so adding variants together will overstate actual demand.

1. Invoice OCR

Small finance teams and bookkeepers receive invoices as PDFs and photos, then type the vendor, date, total and line items into their accounting tool. An invoice OCR app reads the document and sends those fields straight across.

KeywordVolumeCPC
invoice ocr320$67.41
ocr invoices software210—
ocr invoice processing170$40.77
ocr invoice scanning110$52.82
ocr for invoices50$120.74

Volume is small, but this has the highest CPC on the list: “ocr for invoices” costs $120.74 a click. Advertisers pay that much because one customer processes invoices every month for years. Accuracy is the hard part here, since an OCR tool that misreads a total costs the customer more time than it saves. Building a narrow version for one accounting tool or one country’s invoice format is the realistic way in.

The twist: start with receipts

KeywordVolumeCPC
ocr receipt scanning720$11.57
receipt scanner ocr590$16.67
receipt ocr320$16.82
invoice template excel5,400$11.03

Receipts get more searches than invoices, and they’re simpler documents with one merchant, a date, and a total. You can ship a working receipt scanner quickly by sending the photo to a vision model and asking for those fields as JSON, then add invoices with line items once the extraction holds up. The 5,400 monthly searches for “invoice template excel” are an easy way to reach the same small business owners before they have a pile of invoices to process.

2. Event check-in app

Event organizers need a way to check in guests at the door by scanning a QR code or searching a name, marking them arrived, and printing a badge. Conferences and workshops pay for this, usually per event.

KeywordVolumeCPC
event check-in apps390$54.63
check in app for events390$54.63
event check-in app390$37.32

At $54.63 a click for 390 searches, this keyword is worth more per visitor than almost anything else here. Competition of 0.46 means plenty of advertisers are already bidding. Most event platforms include check-in, so a standalone app has to be faster or cheaper at the door than the one bundled with the ticketing tool.

The twist: QR codes from a spreadsheet

KeywordVolumeCPC
wedding guest list1,900$7.89
app for volunteer sign up590$10.77
qr code check-in140$21.31
event qr code check in30$85.77

“Event qr code check in” has tiny volume, but at $85.77 a click it’s the second most expensive keyword in our research, right behind “ocr for invoices”. Ticketing platforms already handle check-in for paid events. Weddings and volunteer shifts don’t run through ticketing platforms, and both get more searches than check-in itself. A web app that reads a guest list from Google Sheets, emails each guest a QR code, and scans them with a phone camera doesn’t need a native app or a ticketing integration.

3. Bank statement to Excel converter

Banks hand out statements as PDFs. Bookkeepers and people doing their own taxes need those transactions in a spreadsheet, and generic PDF converters break the table apart. This converter only handles bank statements and returns clean date, description, and amount columns.

KeywordVolumeCPC
bank statement convert1,000$10.30
bank statement converter880$9.35
convert bank statements to excel480$38.79
bank statement pdf to excel210$17.47
convert bank statement pdf to csv110$26.88

“Convert bank statements to excel” costs $38.79 a click, about 19 times the $2.02 for the generic “pdf to excel”. In the UK, “bank statement converter” gets 1,300 searches a month, beating the 880 in the US. Competition of 0.62 is the second highest on this list, so expect a crowded ad auction.

The twist: analyze the statement instead of converting it

KeywordVolumeCPC
ai for bank statements70$44.74
ai bank statement analysis free70$28.35
bank statement analyzer70$26.19

Conversion is crowded, while analysis is smaller and pays better. “Ai for bank statements” goes for $44.74 a click, which beats the main conversion keyword. Lenders and loan brokers read statements to check income, recurring bills, and bounced payments. The same parser that pulls transactions out of a PDF can pass them to a model to write that summary, giving you a report a broker would pay for per file.

4. Screenshot API

Developers call an API with a URL and get back an image of the page for link previews, social cards, archiving, or monitoring.

KeywordVolumeCPC
screenshot api880$22.01
api screenshot320$5.36
website screenshot api140$21.86
get website screenshot2,900$3.22

880 searches at $22.01 with competition of only 0.19 is a strong combination: developers search for it, they pay, and few advertisers are bidding. “Get website screenshot” has more volume (2,900) but a $3.22 CPC, which points to people who just want one screenshot rather than an API. You could write the docs page for the first group and put up a free tool to catch traffic from the second.

The twist: render PDFs with the same browser

KeywordVolumeCPC
pdf generator api320$13.56
pdf generation api50$42.92
og image1,900$0.00
open graph image generator210$0.00

A screenshot API runs a headless browser, which can already print any page to PDF. “Pdf generator api” gets 320 searches at $13.56, and “pdf generation api” costs $42.92 a click. Most teams build invoices, reports, and certificates as HTML templates anyway. On the side, “og image” gets 1,900 searches with no advertisers, so a free Open Graph image generator built on the same API can bring in developers without ad spend.

5. Website change monitor

Users enter a URL and get an alert when it changes, whether they are watching a competitor’s pricing page, a government form, or an out-of-stock product.

KeywordVolumeCPC
web page change monitor1,300$14.04
website change monitor1,300$12.16
monitoring web pages for changes480$19.00
track web page change480$8.09

1,300 monthly searches at $12 to $19 a click is solid for a subscription tool, and competition is moderate at 0.28. Because the use cases are so broad, positioning a general monitor can be tough. Picking one angle, like competitor price tracking, makes the landing page and the ads easier to write.

The twist: competitor price tracking for online stores

KeywordVolumeCPC
monitor competitors prices1,300$61.49
competitive price monitoring1,300$53.01
price monitoring software480$74.36
track competitor prices210$45.93

This is our favorite find in the list. “Monitor competitors prices” has the same 1,300 searches as the general change monitor at more than four times the CPC, and “track competitor prices” has a competition score of just 0.07. Many Shopify stores publish their catalog as JSON at /products.json, so a tracker can read prices directly instead of comparing screenshots. We’d start with Shopify competitors and add other platforms later.

6. Webhook tester

A developer gets a temporary URL, points a webhook at it, and inspects every request that arrives while debugging an integration.

KeywordVolumeCPC
webhook tester1,600$8.20
webhook test1,600$13.38
online webhook tester110$14.27
test a webhook30$37.06

1,600 searches with competition of 0.11 means very few advertisers are bidding. The catch is that most people expect this to be free and only need it for an hour. It makes the most sense as a free tool that brings developers into a paid product, like webhook replay or monitoring.

Webhook.site hands every visitor a free URL, then sells permanent URLs, history and workflows from $7.5 a month. Captured 13 October 2026.

The twist: forward webhooks to localhost

KeywordVolumeCPC
ngrok alternatives1,000$40.59
alternative to ngrok110$66.03
webhook slack2,400$15.83
stripe webhook1,600$20.40

Developers test webhooks to get them into the app running on their laptop, which is what ngrok does. “Ngrok alternatives” gets 1,000 searches at $40.59 a click with a competition score of 0.01, beating “webhook tester” itself. A small CLI that forwards requests from the public URL to localhost turns a throwaway page into a tool developers keep installed. Webhook.site already ships a whcli forward command, so there’s precedent for this.

7. JSON to CSV converter

Users paste or upload JSON and get a CSV back when an export or API response needs to go into a spreadsheet.

KeywordVolumeCPC
json to csv9,900$9.36
convert json to csv2,900$7.80
json to csv converter2,400$6.90
convert json file to csv210$6.12

At 9,900 searches a month and a 0.02 competition score, this is the least crowded ad auction on the list. Because almost nobody pays for a single file conversion, this is mainly a traffic play where revenue comes from a paid tier for large files, scheduled jobs, or an API.

ConvertCSV JSON to CSV page with a note that the conversion is also available as an API
ConvertCSV's free JSON to CSV page points visitors to a paid API at ConvertCsv.io. Captured 13 October 2026.

The twist: from file conversion to API sync

KeywordVolumeCPC
json to excel2,900$10.97
google sheets api3,600$16.71
json to csv python390$0.00
nested json to csv30$5.62

“Json to excel” gets 2,900 searches with a 0.02 competition score, so it pays to output .xlsx alongside CSV. Running the conversion in the browser handles large files and keeps the data on the user’s machine. The paid product is the step after conversion. People searching “google sheets api” (3,600 searches, $16.71) usually want API data piped into a spreadsheet on a schedule rather than a one-off file export.

8. Email signature generator

Users fill in a form, pick a template, and copy an HTML signature into Gmail or Outlook. Companies pay for these tools to keep every employee’s signature consistent.

KeywordVolumeCPC
email signature generator18,100$9.03
email signature maker18,100$7.20
email footer generator14,800$5.36
free email signature generator5,400$6.92

18,100 searches a month is the biggest volume on this list, though it is also the most obvious idea here. Expect a first page full of free generators from bigger companies. The real money is in team management (one admin managing consistent signatures for 50 people) rather than single-user tools.

The twist: build for Outlook

KeywordVolumeCPC
how to add signature in outlook33,100$1.62
outlook email signature14,800$9.83
realtor email signature720$4.35
html email signature1,000$11.08

“How to add signature in outlook” gets 33,100 searches, outpacing the main generator keyword, and “outlook email signature” has a competition score of 0.08 compared to 0.26 for the generator. Outlook users usually work at companies with an IT admin, who is the actual buyer for team signatures. An Outlook add-in can insert the signature whenever someone starts a new email, so nobody has to paste raw HTML. Realtors (720 searches) are also a good niche for a dedicated template pack.

9. Digital punch card

Cafés, salons, and car washes pay a monthly fee to put their loyalty cards on the customer’s phone instead of paper (buy nine coffees, get the tenth free).

KeywordVolumeCPC
digital punch card480$9.78
electronic punch card390$7.50
virtual punch card110$8.54
punchcard app90$18.14

Competition of 0.64 is the highest on this list, for a modest 480 searches. Small businesses are also slow to adopt new software, so this works best if you can sell through a channel that already reaches them, like a point-of-sale integration.

The twist: Apple Wallet passes instead of an app

KeywordVolumeCPC
loyalty programs for small businesses1,300$38.65
loyalty cards for small business1,300$26.67
apple wallet pass320$11.39
loyalty program software for small business90$63.07

Small business owners search for “loyalty programs for small businesses” far more than “digital punch card”: 1,300 searches at $38.65, which is four times the CPC. Customers don’t want to download another app, and an Apple Wallet pass skips that step. A pass is a signed .pkpass file that your server can update, so the stamp count changes on the customer’s phone after each visit. Google Wallet has an equivalent API.

10. Cron job monitoring

A scheduled job pings the service when it runs, and the developer gets an alert if the ping doesn’t arrive on time.

KeywordVolumeCPC
cron job monitoring140$7.14
crontab monitor140$18.61
cron monitoring140$10.56

140 searches is the smallest volume on the list. Developers who search for it will pay, and competition is low at 0.14, but there isn’t much search demand to grow on. It fits better as a feature inside a broader uptime or monitoring product.

Healthchecks.io homepage: simple and effective cron job monitoring
Healthchecks.io monitors cron jobs and scheduled tasks, with 20 checks free. Captured 13 October 2026.

The twist: a free cron tool on top

KeywordVolumeCPC
cron expression8,100$0.00
crontab guru6,600$0.00
cron job calculator3,600$0.00
cron expression generator2,900$0.00

Cron monitoring only gets 140 searches, but developers search “cron expression” 8,100 times a month and look up crontab.guru by name 6,600 times. None of those keywords have advertisers. A free tool that translates a cron schedule into plain English and lets users monitor the job in one click puts you right in front of the developers who need monitoring.

How we pulled the data

Each number came from a single call to the seodata.dev API, which also returns related keywords and their volumes:

curl "https://api.seodata.dev/v1/keyword?q=invoice+ocr&country=us"

If you use Claude or ChatGPT, you can get the same data through the seodata.dev MCP server. Its lookup_keywords tool checks a batch of keywords in one call, which makes it easy to size your own list of ideas.
